Comprehensive Neurodevelopmental Assessment- For children birth-7 years

A comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessment involves the combination of interviews, play-based assessment, and developmental testing using tools that are appropriate for your child’s age and developmental level. The specific tools used to evaluate your child will vary depending on your child’s age and the presenting concern.

The evaluation of younger children will include assessment of their overall general level of development, the child’s speech (expressive skills) and language (receptive skills), physical development, and interactive/play skills. Older children; ie, school-age, will be evaluated for academic skills, overall cognitive ability, attention, and fine motor skills including handwriting.

For younger children (i.e., less than 4 years old), the evaluation appointment will include parent interview, assessment and discussion of results of the evaluation. Written report will be provided to parent at a later time. During this discussion, Dr. Eboni will discuss her findings and answer parents’ questions as well as make recommendations regarding your child’s treatment plan which may include therapies such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavior therapy, medical studies, etc. This visit usually takes about 2-3 hours but may be shorter or longer depending on various factors. These factors may include level of cooperation, child needing breaks, etc.

For school-age children (i.e., more than 5 years old), a follow-up parent conference will be scheduled at least 1-2 weeks after the initial evaluation and the written report will be provided at the time of this follow-up visit. During this visit, Dr. Eboni will discuss her findings and recommendations as indicated which may include therapies such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavior therapy, medical studies, school accommodations, and further evaluations that may be indicated, etc. The length of this assessment typically takes 3-4 hours but may be shorter or longer depending on various factors. These factors may include level of cooperation, child needing breaks, etc.

If indicated, Dr. Eboni can administer the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), which is often considered the gold-standard of autism spectrum disorders observation measures. Please note that this measure must be scheduled for a day separate than that of the initial evaluation.

Parents should bring their child’s favorite snacks and something to drink. Parents should prepare to be available throughout the course of this evaluation. For younger children, parents are typically in the room during the assessment. For children that are older, the parents can expect to be in the room for a portion of the evaluation but may be asked to wait in the waiting room for a portion of the evaluation.

If it is suspected that a child has a diagnosis outside of our area of expertise, we will assist with appropriate referral and follow-up.
