Hi Exceptional Parents! It’s me, Dr. Eboni. I am a developmental and behavioral pediatrician. However, many people that I meet are not sure what a developmental and behavioral pediatrician is or what we do, so I would like to share some information.

What is required to become a developmental and behavioral pediatrician?

Developmental and behavioral pediatricians (DBP) first complete training in general pediatrics (3 years) which is followed by additional sub-specialty training (3 additional years) to learn specifically how to evaluate, counsel, support, and provide treatment for children and their families with concerns regarding their child’s development and/or behavior.

What is the difference between my child’s general pediatrician and a developmental and behavioral pediatrician?

Your child’s general pediatrician (or PCP) does so many things for your child. Your child’s PCP provides preventive care, regular well-baby, or well-child visits, as well as treating infections, injuries and so many other things. A developmental and behavioral pediatrician specifically focuses on supporting your child’s development, behavior, and learning especially when there is concern by you as a parent and/or your PCP.

Why should my child see a developmental and behavioral pediatrician (DBP)?

If you or your child’s PCP are concerned that your child is experiencing developmental delays, behavioral challenges, or even if you would just like to better understand your child’s development and behavior, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician can help you determine the best path to help your child. Developmental and behavioral pediatricians conduct a thorough assessment which will be both age and developmentally appropriate, provide a diagnosis if indicated, and make recommendations for how to support your child. These assessments are individualized and tailored to each individual child and are based on your concerns as a parent, referral questions from your PCP, observations, and interaction with your child.
